One of the more important health observances is the one this month for colorectal cancer or colon cancer. When I talk to people about getting their colonoscopies to screen for colon cancer they are, understandably, hesitant because, really, who wants to have a camera stuck up their rear end. Okay, I?m not trying to scare you away from getting this procedure done. It?s not the most pleasant thing to think about but it?s very important to have done because any polyps are taken out and any early cancer is, literally, nipped in the bud. Most people who?ve had a colonoscopy will tell you that it?s actually the prep the night before that is the worst part of the procedure because you have to take a large amount of laxative to clean out your colon. For the actual test you?re given a sedative and won?t remember the procedure. The recommendation is for your first screening colonoscopy should be done at age 50 or, if you have a first degree relative who?s had colon cancer, 10 years earlier than the age at which they were diagnosed unless it?s older than 50.
