Are pills the new alcohol?

Here's a quote from the March 26, 2012 New York Magazine cover story, "Listening to Xanax: How America Learned to Stop Worrying About Worrying and Pop its Pills Instead," by Lisa Miller:

So reliably relaxing are the effects of benzodiazepines that SAMHSA's director of substance-abuse treatment, H. Wesley Clark, says they've gained a reputation as 'alcohol in a pill.' And their consumption can be equally informal. Just as friends pour wine for friends in times of crisis, so too do doctors, moved by the angst of their patients, 'have sympathy and prescribe more,' says Clark. There are a lot more benzos circulating these days, and a lot more sharing.

The article is accompanied by an illustration called "Chill-Pill Matchmaking," which shows "four anxious archetypes and the drugs that might suit them." The recommended pills are Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin and Valium.

Last I checked, these were some heavy-duty drugs, and yes, some people cannot function without them. But those who can function without them would be better off trying to deal with the anxiety another way. Because Xanax is extremely addictive, it is only approved by the FDA for up to eight weeks of use. In Great Britain, it is only approved for four weeks of use. Withdrawal symptoms can last for up to a year.

The thing is, pills and alcohol are not equal. Consider this: According to the CDC, nationwide, one person dies every 19 minutes of prescription drug overdoses. Mixing drugs and alcohol can be deadly, but many people don't think twice about popping a Xanax and still having their alcohol of choice.

I remember being in my 20s, living in Manhattan, going out every night with my friends. Drinking was the center of my social life, and I didn't want to give it up, even for one night. If I was on antibiotics, and the doctor said drinking was not recommended, I drank anyway. I'd rationalize it, telling my friends, "It's not like the doctor said definitely don't drink. He just said he didn't recommend it."

Many people who already drink alcohol as a regular part of their routine are simply adding the pills on top of it, instead of substituting one for the other.

In an article on the dangers of mixing prescription drugs and alcohol in the Miami Herald, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN chief medical correspondent, explains that part of the problem is the perception that legal drugs are safe. If a doctor prescribes it, it must be okay.

Dr. Gupta says in his interview with the Miami Herald that doctors need to give stronger warnings. According to Gupta, when doctors say, "Don't drink if you are taking this medication," it seems like a courtesy warning. Gupta believes that "a warning that a person dies every 19 minutes would be a stronger warning."

Building Relationships with Students

I had someone ask me recently how I built the relationships with the guys in my high school small group. I should tell you that the person who asked is a new high school small group leader. He went on to tell me how he thinks that the students in his group don?t see him as someone they can talk to or someone who they want to open up to about their lives.

My first question to him was how much time do you spend with your students outside of the normal small group meeting time and how often do you contact them. His response was that he only saw them each week at small group.

I asked him how long he thought it would take him to build a friendship with anyone where the only contact you had with that person was an hour or two a week. Once that time period was done you don?t see the person for another week. I could see the wheels in his mind begin to turn at this point.

I told him how I establish the bond with my students. First, I text them at least once a week and after I know them better it?s usually more than that. I?ll send them a short text asking how things are going, ask them something funny, tell them stupid mistakes I just made?you know, the stuff friends do. I try to text a Bible verse or quick devotion to all of them a couple of times per week. I also make a point of seeing them each week when they come to our high school service. That gives me face time with my students at least twice a week. I try to fit in some one-on-one time with them whenever I can that makes the relationship more of a personal one than just a group relationship.

I make it known to my students that I am available to them whenever they need me. Now I should say here that I do qualify that statement to them. If you?re having a problem at two in the morning please text me and ask for help, but don?t text me at two in the morning to ask what time is small group meeting tomorrow?

I have a private Facebook page for our group where we can post prayer requests, information about this week?s small group, etc. I also use that to post to all of them at one time that I?m thinking about them. Little things mean a lot. They do to us leaders and they really do to students.

When you do these things you slowly build a relationship with students and you go from a stranger to someone they know they can trust and a lasting friendship with a student is born.

No Joke: 'American Idol' Loses Heejun Han

The laughs are over for Heejun Han, as this season's court jester was voted off "American Idol" on Thursday (March 29).

Han, who with his goofball demeanor and off-center sense of humor was criticized heavily for not taking the competition seriously enough, ended up at the bottom of America's votes following Wednesday's performance episode, despite earning a standing ovation from the judges for his performance of Donny Hathaway's "A Song for You." He reprised the song for the judges in an effort to get them to use their one save for the season on him, but the judges let him go.

"Let the record show that you knew this was coming yourself, you saw it come this week," Steven Tyler told him. "Unfortunately after talking, we're gonna have to let you go, man."

Just 24 hours earlier, Tyler had praised Han for turning himself around in the competition, and Jennifer Lopez reaffirmed his talents, telling him, "You didn't make it this far by mistake." Randy Jackson welcomed him back to the competition, telling him, "Finally, the Heejun that we selected came back to us tonight!"

But the 22-year-old from Flushing, New York's fate may have been sealed following his performance of Billy Joel's "My Life" the week prior, which was met by a stinging critique from "Idol" mentor Jimmy Iovine. "He came out and disrespected the entire process. His performance was more like four minutes of a bad Adam Sandler movie that goes straight to DVD," Iovine said, referring to it as a "stunt gone wrong." "At the end of the day, Interscope has to spend a lot of money on somebody who wins this show, and that's not it."

At the time, Han — who landed in second to last place following the performance — defended himself by saying, "I'm not trying to be a star, I'm just really happy where I am."

Han was in the bottom three Thursday with Hollie Cavanagh and Skylar Laine. Laine was sent back to safety first, and was followed by Cavanagh. It was the first time in the bottom three for both Laine and Cavanagh.

Also on the show, Eric Benet came out to surprise DeAndre Brackensick, who performed his song "Sometimes I Cry" on Wednesday's show.

Meanwhile, last year's "Idol" champ Scotty McCreery performed his latest single, 'Water Tower Town," and was presented with a platinum sales plaque by Iovine, signifying 1 million sales of his debut album, Clear as Day.

Nicki Minaj appeared and performed "Starships" and made a pitch to do a guest-judging bid on the show. "J. Lo, can you scoot over a little bit?" she asked, to which Lopez replied, "I don't know if there's enough room for both of us up here!"

The stock market wants to go higher and I?m amazed at the brazen accommodation of the U.S. Federal Reserve in terms of keeping equity investors happy. It?s almost as if Ben Bernanke is guiding monetary policy with an eye to helping the current administration politically. Regardless, the combination of good corporate earnings, reasonable valuations, interest rate certainty, and paternal assurance from the Federal Reserve almost ensures higher stock prices going forward. Recent central bank policy action is certainly ammunition for cynics.

The S&P 500 Index is at the 1,350 level, which is where it was last spring. This, in my mind, represents an impressive recovery from the stock market correction that began last July. The S&P 500 would have to break 1,450 in order to technically attain a right shoulder formation, and it very well could achieve it this year. Pull up a long-term chart on the index and you?ll see the incredible formation. To be frank, I think it?s likely the S&P 500 Index will complete this stunning configuration.

Spot prices for gold and silver are looking good in this market. They aren?t moving in lock step with the stock market but the Federal Reserve is so keen on keeping interest rates and the U.S. dollar down, it?s only a matter of time before gold breaks its recent high. (See Stock Market Correction Phase Over? Spot Price of Gold Looks to Be Bottoming.) It?s a great time to be in the mining business; it?s an industry that?s ripe for consolidation over the next two or three years. Lots of money is going to be made in gold stocks over the coming quarters.

As I say, the Federal Reserve could not be any more accommodative in global capital markets; the stock market in particular. The unprecedented policy to target very low interest rates for the next 18 months or so may prove to be irresponsible, or, at the very least, not attainable. Policymakers (including the Federal Reserve) keep tweaking they way in which they report inflation numbers and this action is now underreporting the current state of prices within the economy. Just imagine what will happen to inflation when the U.S. economy returns to a normalized growth rate. With government spending, money supply and sovereign debt all at record levels, it seems probable that inflation is going to be a huge problem in the not-too-distant future.

But none of this matters if you?re the Chairman of the Federal Reserve over the short term. The actions, it would seem, of policymakers today are to keep stock market investors happy, at least until the election is over. US jobless claims fall to lowest level in 4 years

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The number of people seeking U.S. unemployment benefits dropped last week to the lowest level in four years, adding to evidence that the job market is strengthening.

Applications for weekly unemployment benefits fell by 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 359,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the fewest applicants since April 2008. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, declined to 365,000 ? the fewest for that measure since May 2008.

When unemployment benefit applications drop consistently below 375,000, it usually signals that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate. The decline has coincided with the best three months of hiring in two years.

The department made annual revisions to the past five years of data, which increased the number of applications in recent months and showed a slower decline. Still, even after the revisions, applications have fallen roughly 12 percent over the past six months.

Most economists still expect another strong month of hiring in March.

"The trend remains unambiguously downwards," said Ian Shepherdson, an economist at High Frequency Economics. "We think the rate of decline ... is slowing ... but they are still consistent with robust, sustained payroll gains."

Separately, the U.S. economy expanded at a solid pace in the final three months of last year, but growth is expected to slow in the current quarter.

The economy grew at annual rate of 3 percent in the fourth quarter, the Commerce Department said. But economists forecast it likely dipped below 2 percent in the current quarter.

Businesses have been restocking their shelves at a slower pace and shipping fewer long-lasting manufactured goods. In addition, Europe's debt crisis and slower growth in Asia have reduced demand for U.S. exports.

Stronger hiring in the first two months of the year probably hasn't offset those weaknesses. That's because Americans' pay has barely kept pace with inflation while gas prices have spiked. So consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity, probably hasn't increased much from the end of last year.

Most economists expect growth to pick up later this year, as more hiring lifts the economy.

From December through February, employers added an average of 245,000 jobs per month. That has pushed down the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years.

Companies are hiring more workers because the economy is picking up. The economy grew at an annual rate of 3 percent in the final three months of last year. That was better than the 1.8 percent rate in the previous quarter.

The number of people receiving unemployment benefits also fell. More than 7.1 million laid-off workers received unemployment aid in the week ended March 10, the latest data available. That's about 130,000 lower than the previous week.

There are other signs the economy is steadily recovering. Consumers remained confident in March, even as gas prices jumped.

And the battered housing market is showing small signs of improvement. January and February comprised the best winter for sales of previously occupied homes in five years, according to the National Association of Realtors.

One concern is that rising gas prices will force consumers to cut back on discretionary spending. That could weigh on economic growth and slow hiring. The Federal Reserve says it expects oil and gas prices to temporarily boost inflation but predicts that longer-term inflation should remain stable.

The job market still has a ways to go to fully recover from the Great Recession. More than 12.8 million people remain unemployed and the economy still has 5 million fewer jobs than before the downturn.

But the more robust job market has caused some so-called "discouraged workers" to start looking again. The work force rose by nearly a half-million in February.

Studies: Surgery can put diabetes into remission

CHICAGO (AP) ? New research provides clear proof that weight-loss surgery can reverse and possibly cure diabetes. Doctors say it should be offered sooner to more people with the disease ? not just as a last resort.

Two studies compared stomach-reducing operations with medicines alone for obese people with Type 2 diabetes. Millions of Americans have this and can't make enough insulin or effectively use what they do make.

The studies found that surgery helped far more patients achieve normal blood-sugar levels than drugs alone did. Some people were able to stop taking insulin as soon as three days after their operations.

The studies were published online by the New England Journal of Medicine and one was presented Monday at a cardiology conference in Chicago.

Both are momentary at best, and will not define the true nature and scope of the relationship over a long period of time. By reframing these extremes, you will be left with the right measure of balance and the right set of expectations to build a quality and sustainable relationship for many years to come.

Great relationships take work and thoughtfulness every day
People who are in successful relationships work on these partnerships regularly. They don?t just set their life on cruise control expecting things to be great all of the time. Ask yourself, ?What can I do today to make my partner?s life better?? Little bits of effort every day will accumulate over time and make a big difference.
Think of small, specific ways to make your relationship better whether it?s picking up your loved one?s dry cleaning, telling your partner that you?re proud of him or her, or taking over a task he or she really doesn?t like to do.
You should make an effort every day to deposit at least one act of thoughtfulness into your relationship?s bank account. Your goal, however, should not be to make a huge withdrawal at the end of the week. Your only goal should be to keep giving the things your mate wants ? either his or her expressed and unexpressed wants. If there are actions you can take to make your partner?s day more convenient and less stressful, then do them. But, again, don?t do them for what you could gain by providing them.
Great relationships need communication know-how

It may look as if people in great relationships intuitively know what their partners need. But the truth is, no one is a mind-reader so don?t expect your partner to be able to figure out how you?re feeling.
When things aren?t perfectly in sync, couples in this kind of relationship know how to communicate. They know that instead of giving their partner a laundry list of what he or she is doing wrong, they can be specific about what it is that they want. They also make an effort to discover what their partner?s needs are. The best way for most people to do this is talk about it.
Ask your partner what things are really important to him or her. Does he want to know you?re proud of him? Does she need to be able to express her sadness over a family or work-related situation without hearing how she ought to handle it?
Too often we get into the habit of coaching and not listening. The best way to let your partner know you are listening is to ask how she or he ?feels? about the situation. Once they begin sharing, your job is simply to shut-up and listen. Offer acknowledgments and affirmations from time-to-time to demonstrate you are engaged with what is being said. Only give your opinion or advice if asked.
Great relationships turn negatives into positives

You may have heard the expression: ?When you are given lemons ? make lemonade.? Overtime, relationships are handed several lemons. The sources for negative feelings and unbalance are numerous. Some are directly caused between both people because of poor or missing communication. Indirect sources of anxiety in a relationship can be work- related or financially based.
When the interpersonal aspect of the relationship is creating the negativity, consider this simple exercise. First, you and your partner must be open to honest feedback. Next, ask your partner this question: ?On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate our relationship (keep in mind the word ?relationship? can be substituted for intimacy; support of one another, etc.).
Allow your partner time to reflect and provide an honest reply. If the answer is ?Seven,? ask this follow-up question: ?What are three things I can do to get our relationship to a ten (if the answer is ?six,? you would ask for four things, etc.)? Again, give your partner time to consider their response. It may be hard to listen, because the answers may sound critical and negative. But really, the answers are solutions to turn the negatives into positives.
There is one more critical part of this exercise. After your partner is finished and you have taken in and acknowledged the areas for improvement, ask this question: ?What are three (or whatever the number needs to be) things you can do to get our relationship to a ten??
By asking this follow-up question, it?s putting the relationship back on equal footing and back into the spirit of a true partnership. Except for certain extreme and unfortunate examples, most relationships are successful, or not successful, because of the contributions and efforts of both. Take an honest look at how you are contributing to any negative circumstances, but also be aware it does take two to make it work and to create a more positive and healthy relationship.
When lemons drop from the trees, but you and your partner were expecting apples, begin to make lemonade by creating an action list of what you both can do to get apples next time.

Nokia's been an annual fixture at the Open Snowboarding Championships for a few years. While one gets sponsorship dollars, the other gleans a slice of snow sport cool. At this year's event, Nokia rigged up 18 Lumia 800s to capture the snowboarders' mid-air posturing, recording the video with a specially developed app. After a WiFi hook-up (and presumably a little bit of editing), the result was the montage you can see up top, made from around 100 different videos. But where's the iShred?

Richard Blais is working with Concentrics Restaurants to open his new restaurant, The Spence, in Midtown this spring. Concentrics now has another Blais-affiliated venture: FLIP burger boutique.

Concentrics recently announced a partnership with FLIP?s owners Ron Stewart and Barry Mills to manage operations, marketing, public relations and expansion plans. Blais will continue in the role of Creative Director for this popular hamburger joint with locations in Midtown, Buckhead and Birmingham.

Bob Amick, Concentrics Restaurants? owner says,

John Mayer Cancels Spring Shows

John Mayer has canceled his upcoming spring tour and taken an indefinite leave from performing due to a medical condition. The seven-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter posted to his website Friday, March 9, that a scope of his vocal chords revealed, ?the granuloma has grown back where it had mostly healed.??

?Because of this, I have no choice but to take an indefinite break from live performing ? it [granuloma] will sideline me for a longer period of time than I care to have you count down.?

Along with his spring tour, Mayer also had to cancel his headline set at the South by Southwest Music Conference this Saturday, and an April appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. His forthcoming album ?Born and Raised? is still on track for its May 22 release date.

Jack White Kicks Off Solo Tour

In the 15 years since Jack White formed the White Stripes, he?s gone on to grace the cover of Rolling Stone, made it to No. 17 on its ?Greatest Guitarists of All Time? list, formed The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, and record label Third Man Records (TMR), and collaborated with everyone from Loretta Lynn to Alicia Keys.

He?s now embarking on his first solo tour in support of his new album ?Blunderbuss.? The first four shows have sold out leading up to his appearance at the TMR showcase at the South by Southwest Music Conference on March 16. His tour continues, including stops at the Hangout Music Festival in Alabama, Sasquatch! in Washington, and Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. The release date for his new album is April 23.

Jason Donovan?s New Disc Customizable

Platinum-selling Australian musician, actor, and dancer Jason Donovan released his new album ?Sign of Your Love? on March 12. What makes the release stand out is that it?s customizable.?

Donovan?s label, Polydor, paired up with MixPixie to allow fans to customize the release with text and photos. The track listing will remain the same, however, including the first track ?I Won?t Dance? which may be a tongue-in-cheek reference to his appearance on ?Strictly Come Dancing,? the U.K. version of ?Dancing with the Stars.? The 11-track, customized discs are currently available online, just in time for Mother?s Day.

?Disco Inferno? Singer Jimmy Ellis Passes

Jimmy Ellis, the unmistakable tenor voice from the Trammps, passed away on March 8 in Rock Hill, S.C., at the age of 74. The Trammps, an American disco band, were most recognized for their signature tune ?Disco Inferno? but also had hits with ?Hold Back the Night? and ?That?s Where the Happy People Go.??

The band continues to perform with a rotating lineup, but the original members, including Ellis, reunited for their induction to the Dance Music Hall of Fame in New York in 2005. Ellis continued to work with the band until his retirement in 2010. According to BBC.com, Ellis passed from complications from Alzheimer?s disease.
