Celtics basketball provides fundamentals, development ...

Posted in Sports | Comments Off

Boys and girls? who play on Celtics? teams learn about basketball in a fun environment.

This fall marked the second year of? Sylvania Recreation?s Celtics basketball? program.? The program is open to kindergarten through fourth grade children who reside within the Sylvania Recreation District. Enrollment for the Fall session was excellent with 60 kindergartners and nearly 400 first through fourth grade boys and girls.? The Kindergarten program, conducted at Stranahan? was held on Thurdays.

The Celtics basketball program focuses on teaching children in a fun, controlled environment, which helps provide a solid foundation necessary to play basketball.? High school coaches and players served as instructors for the? first through fourth grade program that was held on Saturdays and Sundays.? The second half of each day was spent in? a controlled game format.? During the instructional games, officials and coaches took the opportunity to?? teach the players the correct way to play the game, rather than placing the focus on winning.

According to Program Director, Rob Conover, the Celtics program is an extremely positive step for the future of Sylvania basketball.? ?To learn basketball is a progression. Much like anything else in life, we all need to learn to crawl before we can walk, and learn to walk before we can run.? Parents can sometimes lose focus of reality when their child is engaged in organized youth sports and many times expect instant results.? This program has been created to provide the opportunity to learn, play, and have fun for as many children as possible? while getting instruction that is suited to the younger age groups.? We feel that the program is huge for the future of Sylvania basketball in general,? added Conover.
The program became a reality in 2010 when? the SAJRD Board of Directors approved the purchase of four portable/adjustable backboard systems.? The SAJRD Board noted that the equipment purchase was necessary to ensure that children have the opportunity to develop properly by? having access to equipment suited to younger age groups.?

An additional component that fostered the program was the passage of the Sylvania School District?s Capital Improvement Levy in November, 2009.? With vast improvements to the school buildings within the Sylvania City School District and specifically the new gymnasiums at Maplewood, Stranahan and Sylvan elementary schools, it became possible for Sylvania Recreation to offer the program without limiting enrollment.? The new gymnasiums at Maplewood,? Stranahan and Sylvan are? also suitable for these younger children. Space and access to the proper equipment is not a barrier.?

The winter session of Celtics Basketball begins in mid-February? and registrations are? being accepted online through Feb. 3.?
