SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) ? California officials say they will press on with the state?s appeal of a court order to release nearly 10,000 inmates by year?s end. The U.S. Supreme Court refused Gov. Jerry Brown?s emergency request to halt a lower court?s directive to ease overcrowding inside California?s 33 adult prisons by granting the early release of some inmates. play pause U.S. Supreme Court Won?t Delay Early Release Of California Prisoners Rebecca Corral Download Brown?s office referred requests for comment to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Corrections Secretary Jeff Beard says the state plans to keep up with the appeal so the ?merits of the case can be considered without delay.? Inmate lawyer Don Specter, head of the Berkeley-based Prison Law Office, says today?s ruling doesn?t bode well for the overall appeal. The court voted 6-3 to reject Brown?s plea with Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissenting. Brown had argued the early release would jeopardize public safety.
