Ballooning size of world's second-largest refugee camp

(Image: Mandel Ngan/AP/Press Association Images)

THIS is now Jordan's fourth-biggest city. In just one year, the population of Zaatari refugee camp has grown from almost nothing to more than 140,000 ? and nearly all of the residents are refugees from neighbouring Syria. Since the uprising began in 2011, some 1.6 million Syrians have fled the country.

With about 1000 people arriving every day, Zaatari, 8 kilometres from the border between Jordan and Syria, is one of the largest refugee camps in the world, second only to Dadaab in eastern Kenya. The latest satellite images from the UN Refugee Agency (below) show that the 532 hectare camp contains more than 27,000 shelters. The main street, known as the Champs-?lys?es, has 3000 shops and the camp also contains hospitals, schools and even soccer fields.

(Image: Digital Globe/Getty)

But life here is no picnic, as UN special envoy Angelina Jolie reported when she visited in June. There has been rioting and prostitution, and the camp is reportedly a reservoir for young men who choose to return across the border and join the Free Syrian Army.

What was supposed to be temporary accommodation is now looking more permanent.

Made in IBM Labs: IBM Drives the Future of Renewable Energy with New Wind and Solar Forecasting System

ARMONK, N.Y., - 12 Aug 2013: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced an advanced power and weather modeling technology that will help utilities increase the reliability of renewable energy resources. The solution combines weather prediction and analytics to accurately forecast the availability of wind power and solar energy. This will enable utilities to integrate more renewable energy into the power grid, helping to reduce carbon emissions while significantly improving clean energy output for consumers and businesses.

The solution, named "Hybrid Renewable Energy Forecasting" (HyRef) uses weather modeling capabilities, advanced cloud imaging technology and sky-facing cameras to track cloud movements, while sensors on the turbines monitor wind speed, temperature and direction. When combined with analytics technology, the data-assimilation based solution can produce accurate local weather forecasts within a wind farm as far as one month in advance, or in 15-minute increments.

By utilizing local weather forecasts, HyRef can predict the performance of each individual wind turbine and estimate the amount of generated renewable energy. This level of insight will enable utilities to better manage the variable nature of wind and solar, and more accurately forecast the amount of power that can be redirected into the power grid or stored. It will also allow energy organizations to easily integrate other conventional sources such as coal and natural gas.

"Utilities around the world are employing a host of strategies to integrate new renewable energy resources into their operating systems in order to reach a baseline goal of a 25 percent renewable energy mix globally by 2025," said Vice Admiral Dennis McGinn, President and CEO of the American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE). "The weather modeling and forecasting data generated from HyRef will significantly improve this process and in turn, put us one step closer to maximizing the full potential of renewable resources."

State Grid Jibei Electricity Power Company Limited (SG-JBEPC), a subsidiary company of the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), is using HyRef to integrate renewable energy into the grid. This initiative led by SG-JBEPC is phase one of the Zhangbei 670MW demonstration project, the world's largest renewable energy initiative that combines wind and solar power, energy storage and transmission. This project contributes to China's 5-year plan to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

By using the IBM wind forecasting technology, phase one of the Zhangbei?project aims to increase the integration of renewable power generation by 10 percent. This amount of additional energy can power roughly more than 14,000 homes. The efficient use of generated energy allows the utility to reduce wind and solar curtailment while analytics provides the needed intelligence to enhance grid operations.

"Applying analytics and harnessing big data will allow utilities to tackle the intermittent nature of renewable energy and forecast power production from solar and wind, in a way that has never been done before," said Brad Gammons, General Manager IBM's Global Energy and Utilities Industry. "We have developed an intelligent system that combines weather and power forecasting to increase system availability and optimize power grid performance."

This project builds upon another IBM smarter analytics initiative at Denmark's Vestas Wind Systems, the world's manufacturer of wind power turbines. Vestas, together with IBM's big data analytics and supercomputing technology, is able to strategically place wind turbines based on petabytes of data from weather reporters, tidal phases, sensors, satellite images, deforestation maps, and weather modeling research. This insight cannot only deliver improvements in energy generation but also reduce maintenance and operational costs over the life of the project.

The Hybrid Renewable Energy Forecaster represents advancements in weather modeling technology, stemming from other game-changing innovations such as Deep Thunder. ?Developed by IBM, Deep Thunder provides high-resolution, micro-forecasts for weather in a region - ranging from a metropolitan area up to an entire state - with calculations as fine as every square kilometer. When coupled with business data, it can help businesses and governments tailor services, change routes and deploy equipment-to minimize the effects of major weather events by reducing costs, improving service and even saving lives.

theatlantic: India?s Forgotten Chinese Internment Camp Michael...

Michael Cheng was six years old in 1962 when the police came to take him and his family away. They arrived, armed and in force, in the middle of the night. Some of the officers, many of whom had known the Chengs for years, were apologetic. They were just following orders, the men assured Michael?s mother, and the family was being taken somewhere safe ?for your own good.?

The Cheng family wasn?t the only one. Andy Hsieh was a student at a boarding school in Shillong, in northeast India. One day, he and several of his classmates were called into the headmaster?s office and told that they would be going away for an indefinite length of time.

When police came for Wong Ying Sheng?s family, they were packed and ready to go. Wong?s mother had escaped the Japanese invasion of Singapore and knew the signs.

(AP) ? The U.S. has warned Americans not to travel to Pakistan and evacuated most government personnel from the country's second largest city because of a threat to the consulate there, a U.S. official said Friday, the latest example of the danger facing diplomats operating in volatile parts of the Muslim world.

The action came amid a flurry of deadly militant attacks in Pakistan. It also followed an al-Qaida threat to U.S. diplomatic posts in the Middle East and North Africa that American officials said was unrelated to the situation in Pakistan.

U.S. consulates have been attacked previously in different parts of Pakistan, and Washington is still scarred by the memory of the attack last year on a diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

The U.S. is shifting nonessential staff from the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore to the capital, Islamabad, after a specific threat to the consulate there, said U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Meghan Gregonis. Emergency personnel will stay in Lahore, and embassy officials do not know when the consulate will reopen, she said.

"We received information regarding a threat to the consulate," said Gregonis. "As a precautionary measure, we are undertaking a drawdown of all except emergency personnel."

She did not provide any details on the nature of the threat or the evacuation of U.S. personnel, including exactly when it occurred. The consulate in Lahore was already scheduled to be closed for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr from Thursday through Sunday.

The Pakistani Taliban carried out a car bomb and grenade attack against the U.S. consulate in the northwest Pakistani city of Peshawar in 2010 that killed four Pakistanis. The consulate in the southern city of Karachi has also been attacked several times.

The personnel drawdown at the Lahore consulate was precautionary and wasn't related to the recent closures of numerous U.S. diplomatic missions in the Muslim world because of a threat from al-Qaida, said two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the order.

Earlier this week, 19 U.S. diplomatic outposts in 16 countries in the Middle East and Africa were closed to the public through Saturday and nonessential personnel were evacuated from the U.S. Embassy in Yemen after U.S. intelligence officials said they had intercepted a recent message from al-Qaida's top leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, about plans for a major terror attack.

None of the consulates in Pakistan or the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad were affected by the earlier closures.

On Thursday, the State Department advised U.S. citizens not to travel to Pakistan, saying the presence of several foreign and indigenous terrorist groups posed a potential danger.

The country has faced a bloody insurgency by the Pakistani Taliban and their allies in recent years that has killed over 40,000 civilians and security personnel, and is also believed to be home base for al-Zawahiri, although his exact whereabouts are unknown. Al-Qaida's founder, Osama bin Laden, was killed in a raid by U.S. commandos in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad, about a two hour drive north of Islamabad.

Most militant attacks in Pakistan have been in the northwest and southwest along the border with Afghanistan.

Gunmen killed six people and wounded 15 others Friday in an attack on a former lawmaker outside a mosque in Quetta, the capital of southwest Baluchistan province, said police officer Bashir Ahmad Barohi. The lawmaker escaped unharmed, and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. A day earlier, a Taliban suicide bomber killed 30 people at a police funeral in Quetta.

Pakistan's major cities, including Lahore, have also experienced periodic attacks.

A powerful bomb exploded at a busy market street in Lahore in early July, killing at least four people and wounding nearly 50.

Lahore is considered Pakistan's cultural capital and has a population of at least 10 million people.

A CIA contractor shot to death two Pakistanis in Lahore in January 2011 who he said were trying to rob him. The incident severely damaged relations between Pakistan and the U.S. The contractor, Raymond Davis, was released by Pakistan in March 2011 after the families of the victims were paid over $2 million.

Islamabad has also been under high alert in recent days because of intelligence received by the Pakistani government that militants were planning attacks on key targets in the city, including the airport and parliament ? although there was no indication that the militants were planning attacks on U.S. targets in the capital.

The threat in Islamabad followed a Taliban attack on a prison in the northwest at the end of July in which the group freed around 250 prisoners, including over three dozen suspected militants.

On Friday, guards at a Shiite Muslim mosque on the outskirts of Islamabad shot and killed a would-be suicide bomber before he could set off his explosives, police officer Abid Hussain said. The attacker opened fire on the guards, critically wounding two of them and killing a third before he was killed, said another police officer, Mohammed Riaz.

The identity of the attacker was not known, but radical Sunni Muslim militants in Pakistan have carried out multiple attacks on Shiites, who they consider heretics.

Insider Info: Great tips for planning the perfect golf trip to Las Vegas, Nevada

Angel Park

Dick Durrance

Angel Park features two Arnold Palmer-designed 18s, a short course and a putting course.

Insider Info
* Given the price of cab fares -- and multiple cabs -- and the hassle of rental cars in this traffic-choked city, OB Sports Golf Management's shuttles and vans that take groups from Strip hotels right to its area courses (Angel Park, The Legacy and Stallion Mountain) are worth looking into. If your group has four or more golfers paying the resort green fee, than the transportation is complimentary.

* Speaking of Angel Park Golf Club (angelpark.com), it is the most versatile facility in town, with two mostly affordable, reasonably challenging Arnold Palmer-designed 18s, along with the Cloud Nine Short Course and a nine-hole, all-grass putting course, both of which are lighted for night play.

* There may not be clocks in casinos, but when you play out here can save you enough money for a few hands of blackjack. Take Bear's Best, where tee times from March 10-May 24 between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. are $80 less than those during the following four hours. Or TPC Las Vegas, where a weekday or weekend tee time in March, April and May from 2 p.m. on is $90 less than one between 8 a.m. and 11:50 a.m.

* If you are a sports junkie, plan your trip out here around a major sporting event like the Super Bowl, any Sunday during the NFL season, or NCAA March Madness. Then get to a casino sports book (especially those at the Mirage, Bellagio and SouthPoint) early to secure a prime seat in front of wall of televisions showing all the action.

Then watch grown men (and more than a few women) cry, curse and scream with joy when their bets pay off. Or when they don't.

From the Expert
"Most people would say that the best time to golf Las Vegas is March through May because of the great spring weather, but with that also comes the highest rates of the year.

"October is actually one of the most ideal months for golf as the weather is perfect, the rates are reasonable, and the courses are probably in their best playing conditions as they are just coming off overseeding.

"The only thing to be cautious of during this time is many courses have a cart path-only policy for several weeks after the overseeding process." -- Adam Lieberman, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Concierge Supervisor

Top 100 Teacher Tip
Wind is a constant presence on Las Vegas area courses, but especially during the spring. Here are a few quick tips to keep your score from ballooning.

1) Slow down your swing (except for drives being hit downwind). More speed equals a higher flight and more spin, which allows the wind to gain control of the ball.

2) When hitting into the wind, take a lot more club and swing easy. Sweep the ball more, with your hands a little more ahead of the ball. Both of these also keep the ball flight lower.

3) If reasonable, keep your approach on the downwind side of the green. Hitting a putt into the wind is much easier. If there is trouble on the downwind side, ignore this idea.

While challenging, if you don't fight the wind, you can get a respectable score. -- Mike Davis, PGA Master Professional and GOLF Magazine Top 100 Teacher, is based at the Walters Golf Academy (waltersgolf.com)

Source: www.sescoops.com --- Thursday, August 08, 2013
A recent Twitter study of WWE and UFC revealed that per capita, based on tweets mentioning the brand name, the best three states in the U.S. for WWE are New Jersey, New Hampshire and Connecticut. For UFC, the best three states are Nevada, Montana and New Mexico. In the case of both promotions, their best states are ones that their headquarters are based out of (WWE in Connecticut, and UFC in Nevada). This means it?s a metric most likely moved by talent and other employees within each respective company. Geographically speaking, the best states for WWE (in no particular order) are New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maine, West Virginia, Kentucky, Colorado and Wisconsin. The worst states for WWE (also in no particular order) are Utah, Oregon, Kansas, Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama. Yale University Catering Chef Cyril Ortigosa-Liaz Wins National Recipe Competition for Minute Rice at 2013 ACF National Convention in Las Vegas

St. Augustine, Fla., August 6, 2013?Recipe contests encourage a chef?s creativity while promoting a product?s versatility, and for Cyril Ortigosa-Liaz, competing in Flavors of the Mediterranean?A Minute? Rice Competition means national bragging rights and $1,500. The recipe competition, sponsored by Riviana? Foods, took place during the 2013 American Culinary Federation (ACF) National Convention at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Las Vegas, July 21?25.

?I live for Mediterranean food. I was born and raised there and I believe this link to my heritage gave me the cutting edge,? said Ortigosa-Liaz. ?I used Mediterranean ingredients, including vegetables, dried fruits, arugula, extra virgin olive oil and citrus?foods that the Mediterranean is known for?to create a dish fresh and bold in flavor. I thank Yale Dining for supporting me in my endeavors, and Riviana? Foods and my fellow competitors for a great competition.?

To compete in the national competition, chefs were challenged to put their creativity to the test and create a recipe influenced by Mediterranean flavors using Minute Rice. These recipes determined which chefs were selected to compete in the regional recipe competitions held during ACF?s four regional conferences. The four regional finalists moved on to compete at the national competition held during the trade show at ACF?s national convention.

Ortigosa-Liaz prepared his winning dish, apricot and squash medley risotto, in 45 minutes for a panel of judges. Recipes were required to feature 50 percent or more Minute Rice, and were judged on originality, clarity of format, ingredients, cooking methods, tableside cooking techniques and creative presentation. The winner was announced immediately following the competition.

Ortigosa-Liaz? culinary background is in traditional French cuisine. He received his culinary education at Lycee Marie Curie, Saint-Jean du Gard, France, and professional bachelor of cuisine from Lycee Emile Peytavin, Mende, France. His experience includes Le Totem, Flaine, France; Le Plaza, Sainte Maxime, France; and five-star hotel and restaurant L?annapurna, Courchevel, France. In 2003 Ortigoas-Liaz moved to the U.S. and became sous chef at Union League Caf?, a French restaurant in New Haven, Conn. In 2010, he joined the Yale University Catering team as third cook. Ortigosa-Liaz is a member of Connecticut Chefs Association.

More than 1,500 chefs, cooks, students and foodservice professionals attended the annual event. The 2013 ACF National Convention provided attendees with numerous opportunities to advance their professional development and enhance their culinary skills through informative workshops and seminars, cutting-edge demonstrations, a trade show featuring more than 115 exhibitors, national competitions and ACF?s annual national awards.

T-Mobile US adds 1.1M customers on iPhone debut, contract initiatives

T-Mobile_store

Reporting for the first time as a public company, T-Mobile is back in the subscriber black, after reporting 1.1 million net new customer additions during its fiscal second quarter.

The fourth largest U.S. cell network, which completed its merger with MetroPCS in May and changed its name to T-Mobile US, also added another 8.9 million customers from the acquisition. In terms of raw growth, 685,000 new customers landed from its post-paid base.

Two reasons were pointed at for the jump in customers: the introduction of the iPhone in March, along with the company's still fresh Uncarrier and Jump! programs, which allow customers to cut themselves free from long-term contracts and upgrade more regularly, respectively.

"T-Mobile's Uncarrier approach has clearly resonated with consumers. By fixing the things that drive them mad, like contracts and upgrades, and freeing them from the two-year sentences imposed on them by our competitors, they are choosing the new T-Mobile in unprecedented numbers," said T-Mobile chief executive and president John Legere in prepared remarks.

iPhone sales accounted for roughly one-in-three smartphones sold, excluding MetroPCS. T-Mobile US cited Samsung's Galaxy S4 also as a revenue driver. In total, sales reached 4.3 million total smartphone units, up from 71 percent to 86 percent of all units sold.?

The company said it was "ahead" of its plan to bring 4G LTE with 157 million covered over 116 metropolitan areas in the U.S.

The firm's adjusted earnings before tax and interest (EBITDA) fell by 16 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago to $1.1 billion, attributed to higher promotional spending and "significantly higher gross additions."

Total revenue rose by more than one-quarter thanks to MetroPCS' addition to T-Mobile's finances from May. Record smartphone sales also played a part, the firm said.

Looking ahead, T-Mobile's full fiscal year adjusted earnings, including MetroPCS, are expected to be around $5.2 billion to $5.4 billion.

Supreme Court Denies Governor?s Request To Delay Release Of 10,000 California Inmates

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) ? California officials say they will press on with the state?s appeal of a court order to release nearly 10,000 inmates by year?s end. The U.S. Supreme Court refused Gov. Jerry Brown?s emergency request to halt a lower court?s directive to ease overcrowding inside California?s 33 adult prisons by granting the early release of some inmates. play pause U.S. Supreme Court Won?t Delay Early Release Of California Prisoners Rebecca Corral Download Brown?s office referred requests for comment to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Corrections Secretary Jeff Beard says the state plans to keep up with the appeal so the ?merits of the case can be considered without delay.? Inmate lawyer Don Specter, head of the Berkeley-based Prison Law Office, says today?s ruling doesn?t bode well for the overall appeal. The court voted 6-3 to reject Brown?s plea with Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissenting. Brown had argued the early release would jeopardize public safety. Survey of Earliest Human Settlements Undermines Claim That War Has Deep Evolutionary Roots

My last two posts discuss two new studies that contradict the Deep Roots Theory of War, which holds that war is ancient and innate. One study concludes that modern-day mobile foragers (also called nomadic hunter gatherers) are far less warlike than Deep Rooters contend. According to the other study, there is vanishingly little archaeological evidence of lethal group violence prior to 10,000 years ago.

9,000-year-old settlement in Jordan, Southern Levant, where humans lived without significant warfare from 15,000 to 5,500 years ago, according to new archaeological survey.

Both of these reports support the view of anthropologist Margaret Mead that war, rather than being a ?biological necessity,? is a recent cultural innovation, or ?invention.? Now I?d like to present results from a new archaeological survey that further corroborates Mead?s view of warfare.

The survey is by Rutgers anthropologist Brian Ferguson, an authority on the origins of warfare. In a 2003 Natural History article, ?The Birth of War,? Ferguson presented preliminary results of his examination of early human settlements. He argued that ?the global archaeological record contradicts the idea that war was always a feature of human existence; instead, the record shows that warfare is largely a development of the last 10,000 years.?

That conclusion has been corroborated by Ferguson?s new, in-depth survey, which he discusses in ?The Prehistory of War and Peace in Europe and the Near East,? a chapter in War, Peace, and Human Nature, a 2013 collection edited by Douglas Fry and published by Oxford University Press. (See also a chapter in which Ferguson critiques an interpretation of archaeological data by Deep Rooter Steven Pinker.)

Ferguson closely examines excavations of early human settlements in Europe and the Near East in the Neolithic era, when our ancestors started abandoning their nomadic ways and domesticating plants and animals. Ferguson shows that evidence of war in this era is quite variable.

In many regions of Europe, Neolithic settlements existed for 500-1,000 years without leaving signs of warfare. ?As time goes on, more war signs are fixed in all potential lines of evidence?skeletons, settlements, weapons and sometimes art,? Ferguson writes. ?But there is no simple line of increase.?

By the time Europeans started supplementing stone tools with metal ones roughly 5,500 years ago, ?a culture of war was in place across all of Europe,? Ferguson writes. ?After that,? Ferguson told me by email, ?you see the growth of cultural militarism, culminating in the warrior societies of the Bronze Age.?

Ferguson finds even more variability in the Near East. He notes that ?the Western world?s first widespread, enduring social system of war? emerged almost 8,000 years ago in Anatolia, which overlaps modern-day Turkey and includes the legendary city of Troy. ?This is the start of a system of war that flows down in a river of blood to the present,? Ferguson asserts.

But excavations in the Southern Levant?a region that includes modern Jordan, Syria, Israel and Palestine?tell a dramatically different story. Ferguson notes that hunter gatherers started settling in the Southern Levant 15,000 years ago, and populations surged after the emergence of agriculture there 11,000 years ago. But there is no significant evidence of warfare in the Southern Levant until about 5,500 years ago, when the region increasingly came under the influence of the emerging military empire of Egypt, according to Ferguson.

In other words, humans lived and thrived in the Southern Levant for roughly 10,000 years?a period that included population growth, climate shifts and environmental degradation, all of which are thought to be triggers of warfare?without waging war.

Ferguson notes that this conclusion is far from definitive; new excavations may reveal evidence of group violence in the Southern Levant. His research nonetheless contradicts simplistic arguments that war is the inevitable result of competition for resources or innate male aggression.

?War is very, very old,? Ferguson told me by email. ?But we can still see its beginnings, and there is no basis for concluding that a) humans have always fought because we are innately inclined to it, or b) that war could act as a selection mechanism over evolutionary time.?
