Verizon Wireless Stores Now Selling Square Card Readers

squarePayments startup Square has scored another retailer partnership, as today Verizon Wireless says it will begin stocking the Square Card Reader in its stores, effective immediately. The readers, which allow iOS and Android users to accept credit card and debit card payments, will sell for $9.97 at Verizon's stores, and come with a $10 credit to users' Square accounts, making the transaction essentially free for consumers. This is the same pricing that Square's other retailers have in place, too.

When young women find their 'creaky' voice

The speech phenomenon known as ?vocal fry? annoys some curmudgeons but may also demonstrate how young women are the innovators in our language.

By Ruth Walker / January 24, 2013

As Zooey Deschanel, Kim Kardashian, and Britney Spears go, so goeth the English language. Scary thought, no?

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

As the larger world obsesses with fiscal cliff-hanging, ongoing wars, and the Super Bowl, a smaller group has focused on a language issue: the apparent rise of a phenomenon known as "vocal fry," or "creaky voice."

You might think of vocal fry as the counterpart to "uptalk." You've heard of uptalk? It's where, like, everything sounds like a question? Even when a person is, like, telling you her name? And, like, every other word seems to be "like"?

California's San Fernando Valley took the blame for the often cringe-worthy uptalk, with its tag-along kid sister, "like." With this annoying mode of speech, critics complained, Valley Girls advertise themselves as young, insecure, ignorant, and, well, female. But uptalk has spread far beyond the valley and made inroads into the mainstream.

Now along comes vocal fry into the spotlight. It's a kind of anti-falsetto, a deepening of the pitch of a word or phrase for emphasis. The above-mentioned Ms. Deschanel, Ms. Kardashian, and Ms. Spears are widely cited exemplars. But the phenomenon is also widespread among women on campus ? and Wall Street, at least one writer claims.

The most recent explosion of interest in the topic was touched off by a particularly curmudgeonly "Lexicon Valley" podcast by Bob Garfield a few weeks ago. Decrying creaky voice as "vulgar" and "repulsive," he reached such a pitch of righteous indignation that I half expected him to call for the repeal of women's right to vote.

But there is another view. In "Creaky Voice: Yet Another Example of Young Women's Linguistic Ingenuity," Gabriel Arana describes vocal fry as "a linguistic trend among young, upwardly mobile women." He explains that it is the result of "compressing the vocal chords, which reduces the airflow through the larynx and the frequency of vibrations, causing speech to sound rattled or 'creaky.' " (Excuse me while I make myself a cup of tea with honey.)

Mr. Arana, writing online at The Atlantic, continues, "Women have long tended to be the linguistic innovators. The standard practice for linguists conducting research on a new language is to find a 'NORM' ? a non-mobile, older, rural male. NORMs are the most conservative linguistically, and typically serve as a model for where the language has been. If you want to see where the language is going, on the other hand, you find a young, urban woman."

He also observes, "In large part, the story of language is one of the dominant political group trying to fix the linguistic code in place, and those below them pushing and pulling it loose."

No wonder Norm Garfield, or excuse me, Bob, is so upset.

I won't defend creaky voice or uptalk as improvements in human communication. But while I'm of Garfield's generation, I'm not of his gender, and my hackles go up when my younger sisters come under fire.

I know that voice is an essential part of a woman's success in the public sphere. Margaret Thatcher and her team cared enough about this to hire Laurence Olivier as her speech coach.

The world has come a long way over the past half century in accepting that the voice of authority can speak in the treble register. But it's telling that at this late date something as personal as a speech mannerism elicits such emotional public responses. You've come a long way, baby, but you aren't quite there yet.

Understanding that books continue to play a vital role as educational materials for students and practitioners, Versita is committed to bringing back the academic monograph alongside more equitable distribution of knowledge

Academic publisher Versita launches its Open Access Book Series with inaugural title by Oleg Tarnopolsky: "Constructivist Blended Learning Approach to Teaching English for Specific Purposes". This recently published monograph analyzes an innovative approach to teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in tertiary education. Dubbed as "constructivist blended learning approach" the method is based on students "constructing" for themselves their own knowledge and professional communication skills in English by making extensive use of Internet sites in English, combining traditional in-class learning with in- and out-of-class learning through the Internet (blended learning). Dr. Tarnopolsky offers a thorough analysis of the principal forms of learning activities in English for this approach.

Oleg Tarnopolsky (Doctor of Pedagogy, Fulbright Awards, 1994 and 2005) is Full Professor at Alfred Nobel University, Dnepropetrovsk (Ukraine) where he heads the Department of Applied Linguistics and Methods in Foreign Language Teaching. His research and publications focus on different aspects of language teaching. He is the author of more than 250 works (books, articles, textbooks) on teaching English as a foreign language published in his home country and across Europe, in Canada and in China.

The new title has already been acclaimed by fellow researchers, Prof. Jamie Schissel from the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, at Temple University, PA, among them, who recommends the book as " an excellent guide between theory and practice for ESP pedagogies". Schiessel points out at the well-organized structure of the book as well as "thorough reviews of literature and examples of classroom activities" that make the content "accessible for instructors of ESP, students preparing to teach ESP, curriculum designers, and university policymakers interested in integrating ESP into their programs". Schissel further observes that "the organization of each of the chapters allows readers to first be exposed to theories framing the chapter's theme before delving into systematically organized examples. Alternative, a reader could use the text as a reference by first selecting a sample lesson and then return to a previous part of the chapter to discover how that activity is situated in relation to learning theories or teaching methods".

The above mentioned approach is also enthusiastically received by Bridget Goodman from Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania, who notes in her review of the book, that: "Tarnopolsky synthesizes theories developed over decades in the TESOL and psychology field, and shows how they apply both to the constructivist blended learning approach and to the teaching of English for Specific Purposes at the university level". Goodman, herself an avid advocate of ESP, writes: "I am familiar with ESP literature which recommends that foreign language teachers consult with specialists in their department to develop teaching materials, but Tarnopolsky is the only author I've seen who has developed full surveys of individuals in the field. He is also the first to suggest simultaneously developing students' language skills and their professional identity through a "big picture" approach to ESP curriculum development." Concluding on her review Goodman praises the author's "inimitable and readable" writing style that makes this book a truly enjoyable read.

Commenting on the Open Access Books initiative, Dr. Agata Morka, Product Manager, Books at Versita, says: "I believe that this form of publishing might change the status quo of the academic monograph, revive it and make it flourish again. Ultimately, books are written to be read and open access publishing gives authors an opportunity to reach an audience wider than the usual hermetic group of researchers. Rather than gathering dust on library shelves, Dr. Tarnopolsky's book has a chance to gather a diverse group of readers from all over the world, no matter what their economic or geographical circumstances might be."

Moscow to start evacuating Russians from Syria

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia is sending two planes to Lebanon to evacuate Russians from civil war-struck Syria, authorities said Monday, a move that appears to reflect Moscow's increasing doubts about Syrian President Bashar Assad's ability to stay in power.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said two of its planes were scheduled to fly to Beirut on Tuesday to carry more than 100 Russians from Syria.

Russia has been Assad's main ally since the start of the conflict in the Arab state in March 2011, using its veto power at the United Nations Security Council to shield Damascus from international sanctions.

But it has recently begun to distance itself from the Syrian ruler, signaling it is resigned to him losing power. Russia's President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia realizes the need for change in Syria.

Russia's Foreign Ministry has said that it has contingency plans in place to evacuate thousands of Russians from Syria, most of them Russian women married to Syrians. Only a few thousand have registered with Russian consular officials.

Russian officials said both planes and sea vessels could be used in the effort.

A squadron of Russian Navy ships is currently in the Mediterranean for a planned exercise near Syrian shores later this month. Military officials earlier said that the exercise will simulate both the landing of marines and taking people on board from the shore.

Russia's naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus is the only such facility it has outside the former Soviet Union.

Assad has dismissed calls that he step down and proposed a national reconciliation conference, elections and a new constitution.

But the Syrian opposition has insisted that he can play no role in a resolution to the conflict, which according to the United Nations has left more than 60,000 people dead since March 2011.

The Syrian government on Monday blamed a rebel attack on a key power line for a blackout that hit Damascus and much of the country's south overnight, leaving residents cold and in the dark amid a fuel crisis that has stranded many at home.

The Syrian capital's 2.5 million residents have grown used to frequent power cuts as the country's conflict has damaged infrastructure and sapped the government's finances. But some said Monday that the overnight outage was the first to darken the entire capital since the conflict began.

The blackout hit residents especially hard because of rampant fuel shortages and below-freezing temperatures. Getting gas requires waiting in hours-long lines at stations, and cooking fuel and diesel for portable heaters has grown scarce and expensive ? forcing people to find other ways to keep warm.

"We covered ourselves from the cold in blankets because there was no diesel or electricity for the heaters," said retired teacher Mariam Ghassan, 60. "We changed our whole lives to get organized for power cuts, but now we have no idea when the power will come or go."

At its height, the outage engulfed all of Damascus, and extended to an area at least 50 kilometers (31 miles) north to the town of Zabadani and across the southern provinces of Daraa and Sweida that abut the Jordanian border.

By midday Monday, power had returned to more than half of the capital, and Electricity Minister Imad Khamis said authorities were working to restore it in other areas.

Also Monday, Syria's defense minister vowed the army will keep chasing rebels all over the country "until it achieves victory and thwarts the conspiracy that Syria is being subjected to."

Gen. Fahd Jassem al-Freij's comments came as activists reported air raids and shelling of different areas around Syria, including a helicopter raid in the northeastern town of Tabqa that killed eight people including two women and three children, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Tensions have flared between Syria and Turkey after shells fired from Syria landed on the Turkish side of the border. As a result, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States decided to send two batteries of Patriot air defense missiles each to protect Turkey, their NATO ally.

On Monday, German soldiers unloaded trucks carrying the missile systems at the port of Iskenderun, while another ship, carrying the Dutch shipment, waited its turn anchored at the harbor.

Also Monday, Syria's main opposition coalition said it had failed to select a prime minister or form a transitional government during a weekend meeting in Istanbul.

The National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces said in a statement that it had formed a committee to "complete the election of a prime minister" within the next 10 days. It also formed seven committees to deal with issues such as diplomatic relations and aiding refugees until a transitional government can be formed.

The group's failure to select a prime minister is likely to disappoint the United States and its other backers who had pressed for its formation in the hopes that it would provide more cohesive leadership for those seeking to topple Assad.

Go Daddy, OfficeMax Partner to Put Small Business Hosting on ...

Go Daddy has partnered with business supply retailer OfficeMax to distribute web hosting in its physical stores.Go Daddy has partnered with business supply retailer OfficeMax to distribute web hosting in its physical stores.

Web hosting giant Go Daddy announced on Thursday that it has partnered with retail office supply company OfficeMax to deliver Go Daddy?s small business web hosting services to customers in its physical stores.

Go Daddy is already probably the best known hosting provider, thanks to years of advertising in mainstream TV venues, including a yearly appearance in the Super Bowl since 2005. But the OfficeMax deal could extend its reach considerably, with the retailer operating roughly 900 stores in the US and Mexico, and earning more than $7 billion annually.

The new Go Daddy OfficeMax channel arrangement is not the first time a hosting company has attempted to sell its product in a physical retail environment. In 2002, C I Host partnered with CompUSA to place hosting packages in its retail stores. And in 2009 web design and hosting firm Slamdot opened its own storefront in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The OfficeMax partnership is the first big announcement to come out of the hosting company since a new Go Daddy CEO, Blake Irving, was introduced in December (excluding the news that Go Daddy?s 2013 Super Bowl ad would feature super model Bar Refaeli). But it doesn?t necessarily represent a new direction for the hosting company, which broadened its approach to serving small business customers in 2012 when Go Daddy acquired financial management software company Outright.

Go Daddy says in the press release announcing the OfficeMax partnership that 70 percent of its more than 11 million customers are small businesses.

?An in-store presence at OfficeMax gives Go Daddy the opportunity to help small business owners and entrepreneurs who are looking to grow their businesses,? said Go Daddy vice president of marketing Teri Dhooge, quoted in the press release announcing the deal. ?The Internet is at the heart of today?s economy. If you?re not building an online presence, you?re missing opportunities to capture new customers, yet, according to the US Census Bureau, nearly seventy-five percent of businesses don?t have a website. Partnering with OfficeMax means we can help more people leverage the power of the Internet ? people who may not realize how easy it can be.?

The deal is not the first such arrangement to recognize the synergy between a hosting service and a more traditional small business service. Web-based small business printing service Deluxe acquired hosting provider Hostopia in 2008. In 2009, Deluxe acquired web host Aplus.net. In 2011, VistaPrint, a very similar printing services provider, acquired web hosting firm Webs.com.

That OfficeMax chose to partner with Go Daddy, rather than to pursue a similar acquisition, is a big win for the web hosting provider, both in terms of the increased exposure, and in the avoidance of another big competitor.

While the press release doesn?t describe exactly what a Go Daddy ?in-store presence? at an OfficeMax retail location will look like, it sounds more like a hands-on service than a box on a shelf. The release says OfficeMax?s ?exclusive bundles? of Go Daddy services ? yearly packages that range from a simple domain and website to a more advanced online store ? will enable businesses to register domains, create websites and ?maximize their visibility on Internet search engines.?

?Trained OfficeMax store associates are available on-site to help each business select the Go Daddy website bundle that best meets their needs,? says the press release.

Talk back: Is the Go Daddy OfficeMax deal a big win for the web hosting provider? Is a traditional retail environment a useful opportunity to sell web hosting services to small businesses? Do you have any experience trying to move outside the traditional channels in selling your hosting services? Let us know in the comments.

Former ORU, TU coach Bill Self in Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame class

Kansas basketball coach Bill Self, who launched his head coaching career at Oral Roberts and Tulsa, is among seven individuals in the 2013 induction class for the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

The 2013 class, announced Tuesday, also includes University of Oklahoma wrestling great Wayne Baughman, Oklahoma City Thunder chairman Clay Bennett, Olympic gold medalist Nadia Comaneci, former Oklahoma City University and NFL player LeRoy ?Ace? Gutowsky, former OU quarterback Jimmy Harris and Oklahoma State two-sports All-American John Henry Ward.

The induction ceremony will be held Aug. 5 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Gutowsky, Harris and Ward are being inducted posthumously.

?This year?s class is spectacular,? said Eddie Griffin, president of The Jim Thorpe Association. ?The achievements of these individuals are unparalleled: Olympic champions, All-Americans and record-setting careers. It?s just remarkable. This group truly represents how great the state of Oklahoma is.?

Regarding Self?s selection, he said he was notified by Griffin last fall. Self?s response was along the lines of ?are you sure??

?Why me?? Self said. ?One of those deals.?

But Self said he is honored and humbled.

?I?m really proud of my state and respect all the people in different sports and different areas that have contributed to the rich sports history of Oklahoma,? said Self, who was born in Okmulgee and grew up in Morris, Stillwater, Claremore and Edmond.

Self was the state?s high school basketball player of the year in 1981 and he was a four-year letterman at Oklahoma State, helping the Cowboys reach the NCAA Tournament in 1983.

?I know I?m getting inducted for coaching because if anybody saw me play, there?s no way I could be inducted as a player,? Self said.

Self was an assistant at OSU before becoming head coach at Oral Roberts prior to the 1993-94 season. He re-energized the program during four years at the helm. In his first season, the Golden Eagles lost 21 games. In his final season, the Golden Eagles won 21 games and reached the NIT.

Self moved across town and became the head coach at the University of Tulsa. In 2000, he guided the Golden Hurricane to a school-record 32-win season that ended one victory shy of a Final Four appearance. He has since coached at Illinois and Kansas, guiding the Jayhawks to a national championship in 2008 and a national runner-up finish last season.

Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2013

Wayne Baughman: Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Wayne was a standout wrestler at the University of Oklahoma. He was an NCAA Division I wrestling champion and placed second twice, becoming a three-time All-American. He was also a two-time Big Eight champion. In addition to his collegiate career, Baughman was on three U.S. Olympic and eight World Championship wrestling teams. He coached two Olympic and five World Championship teams. He placed fifth and seventh in the Olympics and was a Pan American Games gold medal winner.

Clay Bennett:An extremely successful businessman, Bennett serves as President of Dorchester Capital Corporation, a private investment firm, and serves as Chairman of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Bennett was instrumental in bringing the franchise to Oklahoma City from Seattle. He works with numerous civic organizations including: the Oklahoma City Industrial and Cultural Facilities Trust; the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation, the Research Institute for Economic Development, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and Casady School.

Teachers in California come out of the closet

They openly admit they stand for the abolition of capitalism.

The Occupy Oakland Education Committee ? comprised of public school teachers from the Oakland, California school district ? has renamed its publication ?ClassRoom Struggle? and its platform TEACH, which stands for ?Transform Education, Abolish Capitalism and Heal.?

Finally the radical teachers have acknowledged what we?ve been saying all along: they want to end capitalism and replace it with a socialist economy, quite possibly enforced by a totalitarian form of government.

Budget Task Force Drops ?Memorandum to the Community ...

Six months ago, I posted that a newly conceived Student Budget Sustainability Task Force, the brainchild of WSA President Zachary Malter ?13, would be forming in the fall of 2012 and eventually articulating formal recommendations to President Roth and the Board of Trustees. Malter pieced together the concept quickly in the wake of widespread opposition to a need-aware Wesleyan.

As promised, the student-run committee has ?worked extensively?to evaluate the suitability of the recent move to a capped financial aid budget and need-aware admissions policy,? and the members have formulated a memorandum to the committee explaining their process thus far and the specific proposals that are under consideration. These aren?t their formal recommendations. Rather, the task force writes, ?it is meant to spark conversation and debate before our final report.?

On President Malter?s request, I?m reposting the memorandum in full. You can also find it in PDF form here.

Memorandum to the Community

Part 1: Mission

The Student Budget Sustainability Task Force?s stated mission is to use all available information to evaluate the suitability of the recent move to a capped financial aid budget and need-aware admissions policy. During that process, the Task Force seeks to identify cost savings, new revenues, or budget cuts that will ameliorate the University?s financial situation and enable Wesleyan to increase its financial aid budget, raise our discount rate, restore need blind, and provide an education of the most desirable caliber and accessibility. The Task Force?s work is based on certain assumptions. First, eliminating need blind is not a necessity?it is a choice?and that in order to justify it, evidence must be compiled to demonstrate that it is the least bad choice of the given options. Second, need aware admissions is morally undesirable since it deviates from our stated common values of admitting students regardless of need (as established in Wesleyan 2020), and the University should do what it can to minimize its negative consequences by maximizing affordability and reinstating need blind admissions at a future date. Ultimately, the Task Force will produce, in addition to this set of initial items for consideration, a second document with concrete and actionable recommendations to the University that optimize Wesleyan?s potential to fulfill its mission.

Part 2: Process So Far

The Student Budget Sustainability Task Force was proposed over the summer by WSA President Zachary Malter ?13 in light of the Administration and the Board of Trustee?s decision to eliminate need-blind admissions. After President Roth agreed to support the task force and its work, the WSA appointed members to the Task Force. They are: Kevin Arritt ?13, Nate Campagne ?15, Alex Japko ?14, Chi Le ?13, Michelle Li ?16, Michael Linden ?15, Zachary Malter ?13, Lina Mamut ?13, Jesse Ross-Silverman ?13, Andrew Trexler ?14, Rachel Warren ?14.

The Task Force began its work by familiarizing itself with the university budget through meetings with Associate Vice President of Finance Nate Peters and members of the Budget Priorities Committee. We analyzed budget documents and conducted research on relevant peer institutions, gaining a thorough understanding of the issues at hand. After educating ourselves, the Task Force met with every top university administrator, including but not limited to all the University Vice Presidents and President Roth, to gain insight about departmental budgets, with an eye for places where inessential spending could be shifted to support the financial aid budget. We also asked critical questions about how university practices such as admissions, financial aid, and fundraising would be affected by the policy shift towards need aware admissions. Last, we conducted outreach to the student body via an all-student survey and two open student fora. This memorandum represents our work up until this point and puts forward various items that we are considering in order to increase affordability. While these items are not formal recommendations, they are meant to spark conversation and debate in advance of our final recommendations.

Part 3: Items for Consideration

Note: The following items are still under consideration, subject to continuing research and review. These are preliminary recommendations only, some of which may form part of the our final report and recommendations in Spring 2013.

1. Waitlist-only need-aware model

While we consider any review of students? finances during the admissions process to be less than optimal, applying the need-aware policy only to the wait-list could be more fair and transparent, while still allowing the University to prevent uncontrolled growth of its financial aid budget.

The major substantive difference in impact on the financial aid budget from applying need-sensitivity only to the waitlist is reduced ?flexibility? in admitting a student body under a capped financial aid budget. However, according to the figures released through Wesleyan?s common data sets, the number of students admitted from the waiting list prior to the Class of 2015 was similar to the estimated number of applicants to be impacted by the proposed need-aware policy. A waitlist-only need-aware policy could allow for similar levels of financial responsibility and, by shifting the consideration of financial need to only less-optimal applicants, would be more responsible to Wesleyan?s core values.

This model offers another major advantage: the aggregate need of the admitted students (before the waitlist is used) is determinable, being that of the matriculating students, before waitlist decisions are made. As such, we can accurately be as generous with financial aid as we can afford, rather than attempting to rely on estimations and data models.

Admission would need to be cautious to ensure that Wesleyan does not under-admit in fear of running over budget. The models currently being developed for the current need-aware policy could be useful in this regard.

2. Hire more student workers to replace staff

We recommend that the University replace some permanent staff positions with student workers. Hiring more student workers would not only reduce the expenses of having full time staff, but also open up opportunities for students looking for work.

For example, contractors on call are paid a minimum of two hours worth of work, resulting in wasted expenditures as they oftentimes do not work for two hours or more. We propose an initiative to eliminate contracted work for grounds and facilities maintenance by encouraging students to take up these responsibilities. One model for this would be to require some amount of labor for all students on campus, compensated on a sliding scale. This would also encourage students to take ownership of the school and become more involved within the Wesleyan community. Currently, there is a group of students outside the task force working on proposals that have a similar thrust, and we will include their input in our final recommendations.

3. Promote greater independence in residential policies

We recommend that students are given more responsibility in maintaining their living environment, such as a standard in program houses or dormitory halls whereby the house or hall residents themselves do upkeep in public spaces; seniors can also be given responsibility for minor maintenance of their woodframes, such as opportunities to paint their own houses. Such a standard could be incentivized for students to participate by dedicating savings from not hiring custodial staff directly to the financial aid budget or the endowment for scholarships. This model could increase awareness of our financial situation and its relation to financial aid, build a stronger sense of community within residences, encourage positive group dynamics, and demonstrate that students are actively contributing to the solution of Wesleyan?s financial problems. We recommend a pilot program to test the suitability of this model.

We are also reviewing a redefinition the traditional role of RAs at Wesleyan, both in terms of responsibilities and compensation. We feel that forcing the RA?s to regulate student behavior through disciplinary actions is both unnecessary and inconsistent with the community-building values that Wesleyan promotes. A better model for the role of the RA would be one that focuses on providing practical advice, community leadership, and both curricular and social support, consistent with many of our peer schools. Given these redefined responsibilities, we also believe that RA compensation (which comes in the form of a stipend), could be reduced, and the money saved by this cut could be redirected towards financial aid.

4. Sell graduate and faculty housing units

Wesleyan currently owns a portfolio of 160 housing units that it rents out to faculty, staff, and graduate students. This housing option is seen as a draw for faculty, staff, and grad students deciding whether or not to come to Wesleyan, although concrete evidence that this weighs particularly heavily in that decision is not readily available. Because Wesleyan rents these properties at rates below the cost to maintain them, the University loses money each year by owning these properties (the annual loss has recently risen to around $500,000). Wesleyan could raise rent so that Wesleyan takes in more revenue from these holdings; alternatively, the University could sell these units off (total estimated value = $14 million) and have an external contractor rent the houses to faculty/staff/grad students.

5. Encourage teachers to take on research/scholarship based classes as a 5th credit

Transitioning from a 2-2 teaching model to a mandatory 3-2 teaching model would save the University significantly; however, we feel that this could undermine Wesleyan?s academic mission and its particular dedication to employing professors that are both exceptional teachers and exceptional scholars. Nevertheless, we recall that our 2-2 teaching model has an asterisk, noting that professors should be willing to work with students in research and independent scholarship as a sort of limited ?fifth? course load, and recommend that Academic Affairs more energetically encourage this commitment amongst the faculty. We also recommend that when appropriate Academic Affairs encourage professors to teach a full fifth class (based on their research/independent scholarship or otherwise) for an additional stipend, which would reduce the number of visiting professors we?d have to hire while still not preventing our professors from engaging in scholarship. In these settings, faculty are able to continue their research, and perform that research with free assistance, but students are also able to participate and learn actively from Wesleyan?s great minds and get credit for their work. These courses would build upon the small class initiative to offer more courses taught by tenure-track faculty, but do so in such a way that saves the university money. Expanding these opportunities would allow the University to reduce its visiting professor payroll while still presenting excellent opportunities for both faculty and students.

6. Restructure administration

We recommend that Wesleyan consider restructuring the upper administration. In researching many of our peer schools, we found an array of different structures for the upper administration, several of which Wesleyan should consider for efficiency. Particularly, we encourage exploration of three possibilities. First, none of the schools we researched had a Director of Strategic Initiatives as a singular position; many schools had a merged Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Diversity. Second, several peer schools had a class dean specifically for freshmen plus two or three floating class deans for sophomores and upperclassmen. Third, course relief for divisional deans could be reduced.

The rapid growth of administrative personnel in higher education over the past two decades is a well-documented phenomenon. While Wesleyan has made significant cuts in recent years through attrition and other means, Wesleyan has not been exempt from this rapid growth and the University should continue to seek to innovate and lead higher education to greater administrative efficiency.

7. Explore co-curricular spending reductions

Students have provided significant feedback that ResLife and UCAB programs are poorly attended, expensive, and otherwise inefficient. Excessive programming is wasteful and creates information clutter that dilutes the experience of other events and the Wesleyan experience generally. We recommend making cuts to the ResLife and UCAB programming budgets. A cut in the programming requirement for program houses as well may allow for the elimination of some Head Resident positions in ResLife due to the reduced paperwork, ultimately resulting in cost savings.

We are reviewing the attendance Center for the Arts events to evaluate demand and the optimal level of programming. We are also researching a cross-school comparison of the same. We tentatively suggest the reduction of the subsidy for CFA programs by either reducing the number of programs or by increasing the ticket fee for students and other constituencies. Increased outreach to the Middletown community to increase awareness about our programs and to attract viewers who will pay full admission might also reduce our CFA programming cost.

8. Decrease rate of salary increase for staff and faculty making over $100,000

Faculty and staff salaries constitute a significant portion of Wesleyan?s budget. Decreasing the rate of increase would help curb spending over time. That being said, there is very little room to do this, as salary increases must be kept in line with cost-of living increases. Being known as a school who gives raises at a significantly lower rate than peer institutions may make it more difficult to get the best staff and faculty. That being said, for faculty and staff making over 100k, it may be possible to reduce the rate of salary increase without compromising the quality of personnel we attract or our rate of retention for staff or faculty. Our highest paid faculty, who would be less susceptible to cost-of-living increases, could afford to endure a decrease in the rate their salary increases, and such a proposal seems worth considering to help increase our financial aid budget.

9. Reduce athletics budget

Fifty-four percent of students responding to the Student Budget Priorities Survey favored reducing the athletic budget. While we recognize that support for athletics draw alumni donations, we recommend that more research be conducted on cost-effective ways to streamline the athletic budget.

In particular, we recommend further encouraging varsity teams to engage in more fundraising for their endeavors, turning some varsity teams into club sports teams, and reducing the money allocated to each team by a set percentage.

10. Put moratorium on building projects

Buildings are expensive (especially new buildings but also comprehensive renovations such as those recently occurred at 41 Wyllys and the Butterfields). While funding for some projects may be covered entirely by gifts, others would require substantial borrowing, increasing Wesleyan?s debt levels or otherwise damaging our endowment and overall financial outlook. Furthermore, gifts that fund building projects could be dedicated more directly to stabilizing Wesleyan?s financial situation and funding scholarships that directly support our academic and social mission. We recommend that building projects focus only on major maintenance until we are able to both admit without sensitivity to need and meet full need of all those admitted, and do so.

11. Permanently end increases of student body

Given the University?s current financial situation, we do not consider the expansion of the student body to be an acceptable solution to the University?s budgetary model. While under other circumstances an expansion may be acceptable or even desirable, our budget is already stretched quite thin on a per-student basis and we see little benefit to the admittance of more students. Under a need-blind policy, the admittance of a marginal student nets the University only $28,000 in additional revenue on average after financial. If the University were to admit more students under a need-aware policy, it may be able to gain more since the students admitted would be full-pay students. However, this would exemplify one of the worse outcomes of a need-aware policy: since these extra ?seats? would be only open to those who could pay full tuition and fees, such an expansion would be the equivalent to selling seats.

The expansion of the student body in recent history has only worsened problems with access to courses and class-appropriate housing. Furthermore, the over-enrollment of the Class of 2015 appears to have exacerbated the financial stress of the University because of the requisite growth of the financial budget, which has exaggerated the purported unsustainability of a need-blind policy. Based on our discussions with students, the student body would be deeply concerned about the effects of expanding the size of the undergraduate classes. In the long term, admitting a larger student body undercuts our endowment per-student and therefore dilutes the long term fiscal sustainability of the University. Ultimately, class size will increase such that hiring new faculty and capital projects are required, mitigating any financial gains from increased class size. We therefore implore the University to not consider this as a viable option in determining the path to financial sustainability.

12. Explore innovative fundraising methods including encouraging faculty fundraising

At many other colleges and universities, faculty are either able to fundraise for their own needs or work actively with the fundraising department (University Relations in our case) to fundraise for the University, bringing a more personal connection to the University to alumni on the road. We feel that faculty and students are kept out of the fundraising process in such a way that damages Wesleyan?s overall fundraising capacity, and we would like to see these two constituencies more actively involved. While the Red and Black Calling Society is composed entirely of students, possibilities for more innovative and personal connecting with alumni, particularly that which more amply highlights the superb and pioneering work that faculty and students are performing here at Wesleyan every semester. We also encourage University Relations to actively work with faculty and students to seek out other new and unexplored fundraising methods that may be able to reach individuals otherwise disinclined to donate to Wesleyan.

13. Aggressively pursue new revenues

We recommend that the University make a more proactive effort to creatively identify projects and initiatives that maximize revenue for the University, thus allowing more money for financial aid. In particular Wesleyan could do better at profiting from its facilities during summers and breaks. Although we do have a summer session and are about to introduce a second, it is relatively short and includes few core classes, particularly in math and science. The program could also be better publicized for non-Wesleyan students and high school students. Furthermore a pre-college program taught by graduate students and junior faculty, similar to Brown?s, might be a good source of revenue as well as an important recruiting tool. A program of that sort is being adopted for online classes, and we highly encourage other opportunities to use online learning to generate revenue from outside constituencies. Much of the University?s facilities also remain unused during the summer and other breaks, and we feel the university could do more to increase facilities rental and maximize usage. Last, the university should look into ways of working with faculty to generate revenue through research. Large research projects such as the Wesleyan Media Project could be capitalized upon to raise money for financial aid and while at the same time increasing the profile of Wesleyan?s faculty.

Part 4: Desired Process for Future Financial Decisions

All future financial decisions of a comparable or otherwise significant magnitude should be considered carefully over the course of an academic year. All constituencies (students, faculty, alumni, staff, etc.) should be actively consulted from the beginning of the process. These constituencies should be actively engaged at the identification of a problem, at the exploration of the problem, at the cultivation of possible solutions, at the weighing of possible solutions, at the decision on a particular solution, at the implementation of said solution, and the evaluation in the aftermath of the same. The administration has a duty to achieve consensus, if not unity, of these broad constituencies at all stages of the process in resolving issues of this significance to Wesleyan?s long-term health, core values, and mission.

We believe the University has not met this obligation in the past, as evidence by the plethora of activism and discussion this semester that was mostly absent last year. This perceived lack of engagement has led to unfortunate tensions between the administration and the student body that have negatively impacted our community?s ability to move forward to find solutions that are viewed as legitimate by the whole community.

Wesleyan has a many-decade history of decisions that were not carefully considered in the long-term, were rushed, and did not engage the thousands of brilliant minds available to it for their opinions and consideration. The time is long past that we had the wealth and the freedom from care to do so.

Part 5: Next Steps

The Task Force will gather feedback on this memorandum and meet with administrators and other relevant parties to further explore the items for consideration?their viability, desirability, and impact on the budget. We ask that the relevant administrators read and provide a response to this document in a timely manner. After considering their and other feedback, we will determine which items will be formally endorsed and constitute our final recommendations. We will also entertain new ideas and conduct further research to ensure the final recommendations are as well informed as possible.

Apple acknowledges Do Not Disturb bug, says it will magically fix itself on January 8th

Apple acknowledges Do Not Disturb bug, says it will magically fix itself on January 7th

Well, it's no "you're holding it wrong," but we can't say we're 100 percent satisfied with Apple's response to the recent discovery of a bug affecting iOS's Do Not Disturb feature. Starting January first, ringers failed to turn back on after the predetermined silent period. Today Cupertino seemed to acknowledge the existence of the flaw but, rather than offer a patch, it simply told customers to be patient:

"Do Not Disturb scheduling feature will resume normal functionality after January 7, 2013. Before this date, you should manually turn the Do Not Disturb feature on or off."

Understandably, it'll probably take longer than five days to find the offending code, whip up a fix, test it and roll it out to users. Still, a thorough explanation is always appreciated and the iOS faithful have already been patient enough.

Elderly man injured as legs pinned by rising elevator

By Lori Bordonaro, NBCNewYork.com

An 84-year-old man was critically injured when he got trapped between floors in an elevator in his Harlem apartment building, officials say.

"All I could see was his legs dangling from the back elevator," said witness Elijah Williams, who said he heard the man's screams when he became pinned between the first and second floors.

The elevator at the New York City Housing Authority-run building on 105th Street started going up before the doors fully closed, according to another neighbor.

"Half his body got caught inside the elevator. His legs were jiggling out," Williams said.

Firefighters worked to remove the man from the elevator, and he was taken to Harlem Hospital in critical condition with a possible leg fracture.

Read more news at NBCNewYork.com

Residents said the building's elevators have a history of problems, and the elevator in which the man was injured Monday was having problems before the incident.

The building is home to many elderly and disabled residents like Williams, who is in a wheelchair.

"My mother is 80 years old. We are both stuck in the house," he said. "We can't leave because we're scared we can't get back upstairs."

NBCNewYork.com: NYC report critical of public housing agency

NYCHA would not confirm whether it had any complaints on record. A spokesperson would say only that the incident was being investigated.

In the meantime, residents crammed into the one working elevator Monday afternoon as a repairman worked on the other. But that's merely a quick fix, according to residents, who are asking for new elevators.

Why Roger Federer Is Such A Good Tennis Player | ArticleTree.info

by DavisPete

There are many tennis players that I like to watch and learn from. I am always so amazed by the way they play and how they hit the ball so cleanly and smoothly on the court. However, there is a lot of hard work and sacrifice these players put in for training and during matches in order to succeed. There are no shortcuts and these players put in countless hours of practice to improve themselves both physically and mentally. These players have been an inspiration to me and I have always been motivated by them. Although I like many players, the player I like the most is Roger Federer, the number 1 in the world. Roger Federer (born August 8, 1981) is a Swiss professional tennis player who, in 2004, became the world's top tennis player.

My favorite tennis player would be Roger Federer because he has always been my greatest inspiration from young. From a young age, I have always been fascinated by his game style and how smart he is on court. I always loved how he would often mix up the pace and rhythm in rallies and use various shots to destabilize the opponent; forcing the opponent to make mistakes. Moreover, I admire his ability to stay cool and calm during the match and showing little emotion whatsoever if he wins or loses the point. Roger Federer uses his brains a lot to play and succeed in tournaments. No doubt the Swiss Maestro has a good serve and decent strokes however, whenever he steps on court, he plays with his head and uses his all-rounded game to his advantage. He serves and volleys, chips and charges, everything; this is what confuses his opponents. This is why many recon Federer as the genius in tennis. I also feel that whenever Federer steps on court, there is always this aura about him and that he is just so neat and majestic. Whenever I watch him play, I feel like he plays so gracefully and effortlessly that it is just so amazing and entertaining to watch the Swiss play.

I like Roger because he is a determined person and will work hard for success. He says 'You always want to win. That is why you play tennis, because you love the sport and try to be the best you can at it.' This shows that he is competitive and is hungry for success. This led him to win 17 Grand Slam titles breaking the previous all-time men's record of 14 by Pete Sampras. Federer's list of achievements is countless and the Swiss has managed to break many records in his years of playing in the professional circuit.

With all these achievements, the Swiss still remains humble and is willing to learn and work even harder to achieve more and scale greater heights. He displays great sportsmanship on court and is always gracious when he wins or loses. I am always so inspired by his attitude as he is truly a remarkable sportsman with great character and amazing achievements.

In conclusion, Roger Federer has indeed been an inspiration and I have learnt a lot from him character wise and tennis wise. He is truly an amazing sportsman and people should learn from his cool and composed attitude. I have been motivated by Roger's competitive spirit and determined attitude to work harder on and off court. I will always admire Roger Federer and will keep learning from his game. He will always remain my favorite player of all time. Alle Federer!
