MANAMA, Bahrain ? A lawyer for the family of a prominent Bahraini blogger says five police officers have gone on trial over the activist's death while in custody.
The lawyer, Mohammed al-Tajir, says the police were arraigned in the High Criminal Court on Wednesday. Two are charged with beating the blogger, Zakariya al-Asheri, with a water hose. Three others are charged with hiding the beatings from prison authorities.
Al-Asheri was detained in March after authorities imposed martial law to quell Shiite-led protests against Sunni rulers. He often wrote about human rights issues on his blog.
At least 40 people have been killed since February, when Bahrain's Shiite majority started protests to demand more rights.
On Monday Bahrain overturned death sentences against two protesters convicted of killing police.
